Snow shoe hikes, Ski touring, and winter fun in Dachstein West

The region around Russbach | Dachstein West offers a large variety of off piste fun in the snow. There are several possibilities for snow shoe hikes, ski tours and other fun in the snow like a horse drawn sleigh ride.

We have put together a few suggestions for winter hikes and ski touring routes for you here.

Snow shoe hikes
On a snowshoe tour you really get to know Russbach. Far away from civilisation you will hike past secluded farms, frozen streams and through snowy forests. A snowshoe tour is the best way to enjoy the unspoiled nature of Russbach. The more demanding the tour, the more important it is to know the area well and to know the proper way to deal with alpine nature.

Fun for the whole family is guaranteed on the 3 km sledding slope on the Karkogel near Abtenau. Ascend with the cable car to an altitude of 1187 m. The sledding slope is floodlit until 11 pm on Thursdays to Saturdays. And if you haven't brought a sled with you, then there is an opportunity to hire a racing sled or a family sled at the cable car base station.

Cross-country skiing
The major cross-country skiing regions of Gosau, 5 km from Russbach (65 km cross-country skiing trails), and Abtenau, approx. 7 km (60 km cross-country skiing trails), are located very close to Russbach. The ski bus will deliver you to our neighbouring resorts within just a few minutes and free of charge.

Winter hiking
Magnificent winter hiking trails around our village and on the Hornspitz invite you to unwind. A hike through the glittering winter landscape is always a pleasure – every breath brings an exhilarating rush.

For some time now there have been approx. 30 geo-caches distributed around the slopes and access routes of our region. Someone who is obviously a great fan of our ski region and an enthusiastic geo-cacher has left his mark over the last few months. We are probably the only ski region to have comprehensive coverage with caches. Heads up geo-cachers! Everybody is invited to hide new caches – we are sure a few more will be added this season.
